Equity is your share of the pot right now: the percentage of the time your hand wins (plus your split of the ties) if every remaining card were dealt out and the hand went to showdown. Equity on its own does not tell you to call or fold. Pair it with the price you are being laid. If you have 40% equity and the pot odds only require 33%, calling is profitable in a chip-EV sense.
