GTO trainer vs solver vs charts

Three kinds of tool get called GTO software, and they do different jobs.

A chart is a static picture of one strategy: an opening range for one seat at one stack depth, or a push/fold grid. Charts are quick to consult and almost impossible to learn from by looking, because looking is passive. You recognise the picture; you do not reproduce it.

A solver computes or stores the full equilibrium strategy for a spot, including the mixed frequencies and sizings. It is reference material. Solver+ is this on a phone: a library of pre-solved postflop spots you browse by position, action and board. Reading it teaches you what the strategy is. It does not test whether you can execute it.

A GTO trainer closes that gap. It deals you a situation, makes you act, then grades you against the solved answer and keeps score over time. The learning happens in the act of deciding and being corrected, which is how any skill with time pressure gets built. The trainer is the only one of the three that produces a measurable number for how good you are at a spot, as opposed to how much you have read about it.

The right combination for most players is a solver to understand, a trainer to make it automatic, and a chart only as a last-resort reference when you need to check one cell.

Which GTO trainer app you need

ThinkGTO builds a separate trainer for each part of the game rather than one app that does everything at half depth. Pick by the decision that costs you most.

Postflop decisions: Postflop+

Postflop+ is a postflop trainer. It plays a GTO bot across flop, turn and river; you make each decision, then see the GTO answer. The library covers all 1,755 strategically distinct flops with full turn and river runouts, and you can filter the spots you practise by position, board texture, SPR and bet sizing, so a session can be entirely one position on one board family if that is where you bleed. An ELO rating, starting at 1200, moves with the difficulty and accuracy of your decisions, which gives you a single number to watch over weeks. There is also a visual range explorer for any board, so when the bot's answer surprises you, you can see the whole range's strategy rather than just your hand's.

Preflop ranges: GTO Ranges+

GTO Ranges+ is the preflop app: ranges for cash, MTT, ICM, PKO and multiway spots, plus a trainer built on top of them. The trainer deals you a preflop spot, you act, and it grades you. Four features matter for how it fits into a routine. Streaks reward showing up daily. Mistake-breakdown reports show which spots keep costing you accuracy, so the next session has a target. Daily reminders keep the habit alive. Custom saved drills let you build your own drill set (one seat, one stack depth, one format) and rotate it. There is no timer mode; if you want pressure, you supply it. The app also includes an ICM simulation engine with support for up to 10 players and custom payout structures, which makes it the right trainer for tournament players whose mistakes cluster around bubbles and final tables.

Push/fold and fundamentals: Preflop+

Preflop+ covers push/fold charts across stack depths, a preflop equity calculator, range-vs-range analysis and ICM-aware decisions. It is the lighter starting point if your tournament leaks are mostly short-stacked, and its charts and calculators work fully offline once downloaded.

Pot-Limit Omaha: PLO+

PLO+ is the four-card trainer: PLO preflop range charts by position, hand-category breakdowns, a four-card equity calculator and PLO-specific training drills. If you play Omaha, nothing else in the suite covers it.

Competitive puzzles: Battle+

Battle+ turns GTO decisions into multiplayer puzzles with head-to-head challenges, daily and weekly puzzles and a global leaderboard. It is a check on whether your study holds up with a scoreboard watching, not a replacement for the structured drilling above.

Look-up, not drilling: Solver+

Solver+ is not a trainer. It is the pre-solved library you consult when a Postflop+ answer surprises you and you want to see the whole spot. The best poker solver app guide covers it in full, including what the free tier is.

How to train: drill, review mistakes, repeat

Every effective GTO training routine has the same three-part loop. The apps supply the spots and the grading; the loop supplies the improvement.

  1. Drill one narrow thing. Set the filter tight: one position, one stack depth, one board family. In Postflop+ that is a position and texture filter; in GTO Ranges+ it is a custom saved drill for one seat. Breadth comes later. Early breadth is why most people feel like they are learning and never see their accuracy move.
  2. Review the misses, not the hits. After a session, the mistakes are the only data worth reading. In GTO Ranges+ the mistake-breakdown report does this for you: it names the spots eating your accuracy. In Postflop+, when a decision is graded wrong, open the range explorer for that board and see what the whole range does, not just your hand. The question to answer is "what pattern did I miss", because the pattern is what repeats.
  3. Repeat the same drill until it is boring. Boring is the signal. When the border hands in a range stop making you pause, and your postflop accuracy on a texture stops bouncing, that drill is done. Then widen the filter by one notch and start again.

Two more rules. Keep sessions short and frequent: ten to fifteen minutes most days beats a weekly marathon, because recall is built by spacing. And never try to fix a leak at the table. Flag the hand, keep playing your current game, and bring the hand to the next session. The how to study poker method goes deeper on the loop itself.

A four-week GTO training plan

This plan assumes you play one main format and can give it fifteen minutes a day. It is a template; swap the seat, stack depth or textures for the ones that match your game.

WeekFocusDaily drill (10-15 min)Weekly review
Week 1Preflop base: one seatGTO Ranges+ custom drill: your most-played seat, your usual stack depth, opening decisions only.Read the mistake-breakdown report. Write down the border hand classes you keep missing (small suited connectors, offsuit broadways, weak suited aces, whichever it is for you).
Week 2Preflop facing a raiseSame seat, now the defending decisions: call, 3-bet or fold against an open. Add an ICM drill if you play tournaments.Re-run week 1's drill once to check it stuck. Add the next seat only if week 1's accuracy held.
Week 3Postflop: one texture, in positionPostflop+ filtered to one position and one board family. Play flop decisions until the bot's answers stop surprising you.Open any surprising answer in the Postflop+ range explorer or in Solver+ and write one sentence about the pattern.
Week 4Same texture: later streets, then out of positionExtend the filter to turn and river, then flip to the out-of-position seat on the same boards.Compare your ELO and accuracy to week 3. Pick the weakest spot from the four weeks and make it week 5's drill.

After the four weeks you have one seat preflop and one texture postflop that you play close to the solved answer, plus a report telling you what is next. That is more than most players get from a year of watching videos. The weekly poker study routine shows how to keep this going past week four.

What is free, and what Pro adds

Every ThinkGTO app is a free download with a free tier, so you can run the first week of the plan above without paying anything. Pro includes the full library in each app at $29.99 a month, $299.99 a year or $399.99 as a one-time lifetime purchase. You upgrade only the app you are actually drilling; there is no bundle you have to buy. The pricing section has the current detail per app.

Preflop trainer or postflop trainer first?

Preflop, almost always. If your opening and defending ranges are wrong, every postflop decision starts from a broken base, and no amount of postflop drilling fixes that. Spend the first two weeks in GTO Ranges+ (or Preflop+ if you play short-stacked tournaments) before you open Postflop+. The exception is a player whose preflop is already solid from years of volume and whose losses are clearly postflop; for them Postflop+ is the right first install.

Whichever you pick, the loop is the same: drill narrow, review the misses, repeat until boring. The app's job is to deal the spots and grade you honestly. The how to memorize preflop ranges method covers the preflop side of this in detail, and the which GTO poker app do you need page is the short version of this guide if you just want the table.

Frequently asked

What is GTO training?

GTO training is practising poker decisions against solved answers. A trainer deals you a spot, you act, and it grades you against the game-theory-optimal strategy, then tracks your accuracy over time. It turns solver knowledge into something you can execute at the table.

What is the best GTO app?

It depends on where you lose. Postflop+ is the best GTO app for postflop decisions: a GTO bot across flop, turn and river, with an ELO rating. GTO Ranges+ is the best GTO app for preflop ranges across cash, MTT, ICM and PKO. Both are free downloads with a free tier on iPhone and Android.

Is there a free GTO trainer?

Yes. Every ThinkGTO trainer (Postflop+, GTO Ranges+, Preflop+, PLO+, Battle+) is a free download with a free tier that does not expire. Pro includes the full library at $29.99 a month, $299.99 a year or $399.99 lifetime, per app.

What is the best preflop trainer?

GTO Ranges+. It covers cash, MTT, ICM, PKO and multiway ranges and its trainer has streaks, mistake-breakdown reports, daily reminders and custom saved drills. For short-stack push/fold specifically, Preflop+ is the lighter option and works fully offline.

Is poker trainer software better than watching videos?

For execution, yes. A video shows you a strategy; a trainer makes you produce it and corrects you when you miss. The accuracy number a trainer gives you is also the only honest measure of whether the study is working. Videos are useful for understanding a concept before you drill it.

Does GTO training work for live poker?

The decisions are the same; the opponents are different. Train the equilibrium so you have a baseline, then deviate deliberately against live opponents who fold or call too much. Our live poker pages cover those adjustments for deep-stacked live games.

How long until GTO training shows results?

The in-app accuracy number moves within a couple of weeks of daily fifteen-minute sessions on one narrow drill. Results at the table lag that, because you need enough hands for the improved decisions to show through variance. Judge the training by accuracy, not by short-term results.

Do I need a desktop solver as well as a trainer?

Most players do not. A trainer plus a pre-solved library like Solver+ covers understanding and execution for the standard spots. A desktop solver earns its place only when you need custom trees with your own ranges or unusual sizes.
