How to Calculate Pot Odds
Pot odds represent the ratio between the current size of the pot and the cost of a contemplated call. They tell you what percentage of the time you need to win the hand to break even on a call.
The Formula
Pot Odds % = Bet to Call ÷ (Pot + Bet to Call) × 100
For example, if the pot is $100 and your opponent bets $50, you need to call $50 into a total pot of $150. Your pot odds are 50/150 = 33.3%. You need at least 33.3% equity to make a profitable call.
When to Use Pot Odds
Pot odds are the foundation of sound poker decision-making. Use them whenever you face a bet and need to decide whether to call. Compare your pot odds to your estimated equity (the chance your hand will win at showdown) to determine whether a call is profitable.
- If your equity is higher than your required equity, calling is profitable in the long run.
- If your equity is lower, you should fold (unless you have implied odds).
Pot Odds vs. Implied Odds
Pot odds only account for the money already in the pot. Implied odds factor in the additional money you expect to win on future streets if you hit your draw. With strong implied odds (e.g., a set mine or a hidden flush draw), you can call with less immediate equity than your pot odds require.
