How to Memorize Preflop Ranges (Fast)

You do not memorize a range by staring at 169 cells. You learn it by drilling one seat at a time and focusing only on the border hands, the suited connectors and offsuit broadways that flip between raise and fold. The premiums and the trash play themselves; the border is where all the reps should go.

The study loop

1 Pick one seat 2 Drill until the premiums are instant 3 Attack the border hands 4 Add the next seat

A full opening chart looks impossible to memorize because you are trying to hold all of it at once. Break it into the only part that matters.

One seat at a time

Learn the button in isolation before you touch the cutoff. Each seat has a distinct shape, and mixing them early is why ranges feel like memorizing noise. Solidify one, then the next.

The premiums and trash are free

Nobody misplays aces or seven-deuce. Do not spend reps there. The entire skill lives in the marginal hands: does this suited gapper open from the hijack, does that offsuit ace open from the cutoff. Those borders are where mistakes and money live.

Let the report pick your next drill

A trainer with a mistake-breakdown report tells you exactly which cells keep costing you accuracy. Drill those, retest, and the borders stop being a guess. That is how a chart goes from a wall of cells to a reflex.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to learn preflop ranges?

Per seat, a few focused sessions. Drilling one position until the borders are automatic, then adding the next, gets you through a full format in a couple of weeks of short daily reps.

Should I learn cash or tournament ranges first?

Learn the format you actually play. The method is identical: one seat at a time, focus on the border hands, let the mistake report drive your next drill.
