A kicker is a side card that does not form part of your main made hand but is used to break ties when two players hold the same pair or similar combination. The higher kicker wins.

What is a kicker in poker?

Poker hands are always five cards. When your best hand uses fewer than five ranked cards, the remaining highest cards fill out the hand and act as tiebreakers. Those tiebreaker cards are called kickers.

The classic example is two players who both make a pair of aces on the board. Say the board is A-9-4-2-7 and one player holds A-K while the other holds A-Q. Both have a pair of aces, so the pair does not decide the winner. The next card matters: the first player's king outranks the second player's queen, so A-K wins with the better kicker.

How does a kicker decide a hand?

Compare the players' five best cards in order from highest to lowest. The first spot where they differ decides the pot.

• Same pair: the highest kicker wins. A pair of tens with an ace kicker beats a pair of tens with a king kicker.
• Same two pair: the fifth card acts as the kicker.
• Same trips: the two remaining cards are compared as kickers.
• Exactly equal: if all five cards match in rank, the pot is split.

Why do kickers matter for your equity?

Weak kickers are a common beginner trap. Calling with a hand like A-4 can leave you dominated when another player has A-K on an ace-high board, because you make the same pair but lose to their kicker almost every time. Thinking about your kicker before you call helps you judge your real equity in the hand.

Does a flush or straight use a kicker?

No. A straight, flush, full house, or straight flush already uses all five cards, so there is no kicker to compare.

Can the board play as everyone's kicker?

Yes. If the five community cards make the best hand for both players and neither hole card beats the board, the kickers are equal and the pot is split.
