Nash Equilibrium

A strategy profile where no player can improve their expected outcome by unilaterally changing their strategy, forming the theoretical basis of GTO poker.

What Is Nash Equilibrium?

Nash Equilibrium is a concept from game theory where each player's strategy is the best response to every other player's strategy. No player can improve their expected outcome by unilaterally changing what they do. In poker, a Nash Equilibrium strategy profile means that if all players follow it, no individual player can gain an edge by deviating.

Nash Equilibrium and GTO Poker

When poker players refer to GTO strategy, they are describing play that approximates a Nash Equilibrium. A true Nash Equilibrium in full no-limit hold'em has not been completely solved due to the enormous size of the game tree, but modern solvers compute near-equilibrium solutions for specific situations. These solutions define the unexploitable baseline that serious players study.

Why Nash Equilibrium Matters

Playing at or near Nash Equilibrium provides a guaranteed floor on your win rate. Against a perfect opponent, you break even. Against imperfect opponents, you profit from their mistakes without exposing yourself to counter-exploitation. This is the defensive foundation of professional poker strategy.

Nash Equilibrium in Preflop Play

Nash Equilibrium is most precisely computed in preflop push/fold scenarios. With short stacks in tournaments, the decision simplifies to shove or fold, and exact Nash ranges have been calculated for every stack depth and position. These Nash charts are the gold standard for short-stack tournament strategy.

Practical Example

In a heads-up scenario with 10 big blinds on the button, the Nash Equilibrium solution says to shove approximately 50% of hands. If you shove fewer hands, you forfeit profitable pushing spots. If you shove more, you push unprofitable hands that lose money when called. The Nash range is the exact threshold where adding or removing hands does not improve your expected value.

Exploring Nash Equilibrium Solutions

Solver+ computes near-Nash Equilibrium strategies for any postflop scenario you build, while Download Solver+ on the App Store gives you access to these solutions on mobile. Understanding Mixed Strategy is also essential, as Nash solutions frequently involve randomization between actions.
