Button
The dealer position in poker, acting last on all postflop streets, making it the most profitable and strategically advantageous seat at the table.
What Is the Button (BTN)?
The button, abbreviated BTN, is the dealer position in poker and the most profitable seat at the table. The player on the button acts last on every postflop street -- flop, turn, and river -- giving them an enormous informational advantage. In a standard six-max game, the button generates more profit than any other Position by a wide margin, typically accounting for 50-60% of a winning player's total earnings despite being dealt only one in six hands.
Why the Button Is So Powerful
The button's advantage comes from three key factors:
- Positional information: You see every other player act before making your decision on each postflop street. This lets you bet when opponents show weakness, fold when they show strength, and extract maximum value with strong hands.
- Pot control: Acting last means you can choose to check behind and see a free card when your hand is marginal, or bet and build the pot when your hand is strong. This flexibility is unavailable to out-of-position players.
- Wider profitable range: Because of the advantages above, more hands are profitable from the button. GTO solutions open 40-50% of hands from the BTN compared to 15-20% from UTG. This volume, combined with positional edge, is what drives the button's win rate.
Button Opening Strategy
From the button, you should be opening a wide range that includes:
- All pocket pairs (22+)
- Most suited aces (A2s+)
- Suited broadways and suited connectors (KTs+, 54s+)
- Many offsuit broadways (KJo+, QTo+)
- Some suited gappers (J9s, T8s, 97s)
This wide range is sustainable because your positional advantage allows you to navigate postflop profitably with marginal holdings.
Playing the Button Postflop
The button's postflop strategy centers on leveraging position. When the big blind checks to you on the flop, you can profitably c-bet at high frequency on most board textures because your range advantage is amplified by positional advantage. Even when you check behind, you set up favorable turn situations where you can bet with confidence after seeing your opponent's reaction to a free card.
