The Check-Back Is Not a Surrender

When the button checks behind on the flop, most players think they gave up. Postflop+ trains the opposite reflex: that check files about a quarter of your range into a second betting range that fires on the turn. On Q♥ 8♣ 6♦ at 100bb cash, Solver+ checks back 24.5% of the button's range, and on T♠ 6♦ 3♣ it checks back 28.6%.

The turn card decides what happens next. Bricks and board-pairing cards get a 25% pot range tax with 39 to 59% of the check-back range. Overcards and connecting cards get a polar 80% or 135% pot bet from the hands that improved plus a few zero-showdown-value bluffs. The tell you are in the wrong family: A♠K♠ checks back Q-8-6 80% of the time, then bets 99% when the A♣ peels, but checks again 55 to 100% on a king, ten, nine or deuce.

Strategy Spotlight: Price Is Not the Whole Answer

Facing a 2.5bb button open at 100bb cash, the big blind calls 1.5bb into a 4bb pot. That is 27.3% required equity, a price that looks like "defend almost everything". Yet in GTO Ranges+ (6-max, NL500 rake) the big blind still folds 54.9%, calls 31.7% and 3-bets to 7.5bb 13.4%.

The gap is equity realization: out of position, a hand captures less than its raw equity because it gets bet off the pot, faces tough spots and can't control the size of the pot. Rake takes its share too. Raw equity says call, realized equity says fold for a big chunk of the offsuit trash. If the pot odds math itself is new, start with pot odds, equity and EV explained, then save BB vs BTN as a custom drill in GTO Ranges+ and repeat it until the folds feel normal.

Hand of the Week: 7♠ 6♠ Check-Raises

The spot: 100bb cash, button opens 2.5bb, you defend the big blind with 7♠ 6♠. Pot 5.5bb. Flop 9♠ 8♥ 4♦: open-ended straight draw (any ten or five), plus a backdoor spade draw. You check, the button bets 1.38bb, a quarter pot.

Solver+ check-raises 76s to 6.21bb 91% of the time and just calls 9%. It is not a lone bluff. The same raise holds the value: 99, 88 and 44 (sets) and 98s raise 99 to 100%, 84s 99%. The small c-bet is where the big blind raises most, 17.2% of its range, against only 6.0% versus the 80% pot bet:

Why the draw raises: the button folds 37.9% to the 6.21bb raise, and when called you still have eight clean straight outs in a 13.09bb pot. The suit matters, too: 76o, with no backdoor flush draw, raises only 40% and calls 60%.

Tool Tip: Why Single-Raised Pots Rarely Get It In

Plug two spots into our free Geometric Sizing Calculator. A single-raised pot with 5.5bb in the middle and 97.5bb behind (SPR 17.7) needs 115.8% pot on flop, turn and river to get all-in by the river. A 3-bet pot with 16.5bb in the middle and 92.5bb behind (SPR 5.6) needs only 65.1% pot per street.

That one number explains a lot: why 3-bet pots play for stacks with normal sizes, and why single-raised pots need overbets to do the same. Run your own pot and stack before you plan a three-street line.

This Week in Poker

Cash player, Circuit ring. Connor Hayward only picked up tournaments recently and has already won a WSOP Circuit Main Event, taking down Council Bluffs. A good reminder that the fundamentals transfer. Postflop decision-making is the same game with a different payout structure.

Straddles are moving online. The UTG straddle used to be a live-game quirk, but more online sites are adding it to their tables. A third blind changes preflop ranges from the first seat around, so the charts you memorised for standard games do not map one-to-one. Preflop+ is the place to drill the standard ranges first.

Put It Into Practice

Train the delayed c-bet in Postflop+, pull every turn card on both boards in Solver+, and drill BB defense in GTO Ranges+. New posts land on the blog every week.
