River Play Mastery: How to Exploit Capped Ranges

When your opponent caps their range on the river, everything changes. MDF Isn't a Rigid Rule—It's a Baseline

Villain bets pot. You need to defend roughly 50% of your range or they can blast pure air profitably. That's Minimum Defense Frequency. But here's what separates good players from great ones: MDF is your starting point, not your final answer. Against opponents who barrel too much, defend wider. Against nits who only bet the nuts, fold more and save chips. Use MDF to understand the math, then adjust based on player tendencies.

The PLO Pair Trap

The biggest leak Hold'em players bring to PLO? Overvaluing single pairs preflop. In Omaha, hand strength comes from connectivity and coordination—not just high cards. A hand like A♠A♣7♦2♥ looks premium but it's actually marginal. You want your aces to come with suited cards, straight potential, and backup. Think A♠A♦K♠Q♦—now you've got a hand that can make the nuts multiple ways.

Hand of the Week

SETUP

Position: CO vs BTN, 100bb effective
Preflop: You open 2.5bb from CO, BTN calls
Flop: K♠ 9♥ 4♣ (pot: 6bb)
Your hand: A♦ Q♦

The Scenario: You c-bet 2.3bb (67% pot), BTN calls. Turn: 2♠ (pot: 11bb). You check, BTN bets 8.85bb. What's your play?

The Correct Line: Fold.

Why: When you check-call flop then check turn on a brick, you're signaling a capped range—mostly medium pairs and weak Kx. BTN's range is uncapped and includes all Kx, and sets. When they bet large after your check, they're targeting exactly this dynamic. Your AQ high has zero equity against their value range and you're not getting the right price to float for a river bluff. Disciplined folds in check-call-check spots save enormous amounts of money over time. This is where solvers ruthlessly fold hands that "feel" like they should continue.

📊 The Meta Is Shifting Deeper

Online cash games continue trending toward deeper effective stacks. What used to be standard 100bb play is increasingly 150bb-200bb, especially at mid-high stakes. This fundamentally changes preflop ranges, 3-bet sizing, and implied odds calculations. If you're still using 100bb default strategies at 200bb deep, you're leaving money on the table—or worse, punting it away with dominated hands that don't realize their equity.
