5 High-Value Spots to Attack Passive Players at Live Tables

Most players know passive opponents are profitable to play against — but few know exactly where the biggest money spots are. This week's most-read article breaks down five specific situations where passive tendencies cost the most chips, from missed c-bets to river underfolds.

Whether you're grinding live 1/2 or 2/5, these are the spots that separate breakeven regs from consistent winners.

MDF Is Lying to You (When You're OOP)

The Minimum Defense Frequency formula tells you to defend ~67% against a pot-sized bet. But when you're out of position, real GTO solutions defend significantly less — sometimes 50% or lower.

Why? MDF assumes zero positional disadvantage. In reality, the IP player realizes more equity through better information and cheaper bluffs on later streets. The result: folding more OOP is often correct, not weak.

HAND OF THE WEEK

NL200 6-MAX • 100BB EFFECTIVE

Top Pair on a Wet Board — River Decision

Preflop: CO opens to 2.5bb, BTN calls. Pot: 6.5bb.

Flop (6.5bb): K♥9♦7♣ — CO bets 3bb, BTN calls. Pot: 12.5bb.

Turn (12.5bb): 4♠ — CO bets 8bb, BTN calls. Pot: 28.5bb.

River (28.5bb): 6♥ — CO checks. BTN holds K♣T♥.

What should BTN do?

The solver checks back KTo here at high frequency. The CO's check signals a capped range — but KTo has decent showdown value against CO's missed draws and weaker Kx. Betting turns this hand into a bluff that gets called primarily by better (KJ, KQ, two pair, straights) and also runs the risk of villain bluffing into us and get blown off our equity.

The play: Check back and collect your showdown value.

TOOL TIP

Postflop+ Practice: Turn & River Decisions

Spots like the hand above are exactly what Postflop+ is built for. Filter by position (IP vs OOP), board texture, and street — then practice making decisions against real solver output.

Try this: set up a CO vs BTN single-raised pot filter and drill 20 river spots. You'll be surprised how often the solver checks back hands you'd instinctively bet.
